Maple Fruit Meringues

Dates also work well in place of figs in this recipe.

1 cup maple syrup
1/3 cup candied lemon peel
2 egg whites
1/3 cup chopped figs
1/3 cup seedless raisins
1 cup broken nut meats

Boil maple syrup to 254 degrees (F). Beat egg whites until stiff, then gradually add the hot syrup to them, beating constantly until the mixture forms firm peaks. Fold in the rest of the ingredients, then drop by spoonful onto a greased baking sheet and bake at 200 degrees (F) for one hour.
