Maple Fruit Bread

2 tablespoons melted shortening
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon soda
1 egg, well beaten
1/2 teaspoon salt
rind of one orange, grated
3/4 cup chopped nuts
2 1/2 cup flour
3/4 cup orange juice

Blend together the shortening, syrup, egg and orange rind. Sift together the dry ingredients and add the nuts. Add the dry ingredients to the wet, alternating with the orange juice. Bake in a greased loaf pan at 350 degrees for one hour.
